Lime

Lime is a versatile raw material that can be used in various forms for a large variety of applications. Being made from limestone it is easy to source this locally so long as there is a reliable local supply of limestone. This is a good sustainable alternative to interior plaster, cement mortar and in some cases an alternative to a vapour control barrier. it is capable of providing airtightness whilst also being permeable to water vapour.

SuppliersSustainable Credentials
  • Low energy production and extraction
  • Carbon capture during production
  • Less Embodied energy compared to traditional cement
Benefits & Features
  • Vapour permeable - reduces risk of trapped moisture
  • Can be produced at any scale - small to large
  • Resistant to mould growth
  • High level of workability
  • Can replace some vapour control membranes in certain constructions
  • Non-hydraulic limes have an indefinite shelf life when stored with no contact to air
Negatives & Limitations
  • Slow Set time for non-hydraulic limes
  • Caustic - protection needed when working with lime products
  • Vulnerable to cold damage, particularly when still setting
  • Most relevant for brick, stone or other similar constructions
